Why I don't do trends

I quite often get asked to contribute to articles talking about trends in interior design but I’m not keen on promoting trends in interior design as I desire to create schemes that last.

I used to work in fashion so I understand how trends are created purely as a tool to make people buy more and increase the sales for the companies pushing them and disposable products and our overconsumption can’t continue.

Although the trends in Interiors are a lot slower than those within the fashion Industry it still creates a desire for more that isn’t sustainable. Trends by their very nature aren’t meant to last, they are also cyclical and a full trend cycle is 20 years. So if you want to know whats going to be on trend, look back 20 years and 40 years to see where the designers will have gained their inspiration from. Why 20 years you ask? Because people who are now in the sort of positions in companies who dictate the direction of product design will be looking back to their teenage and formative years as sources of inspiration and being nostalgic for those times.

People always assume that I must be changing my house up all the time but like you I want to be able to spend my money on other things, not just the newest tile for my bathroom or sofa. I took my time considering the designs in my own property and how i wanted them to feel look and work in together so all the spaces worked cohesively, this means that I am still happy with all the spaces 3 years later and don’t feel the need to change them up just to look good on Instagram.

Considered design should mean that you are designing not just for now but the future as well so you don’t end up looking back and regretting some of the design choices you made. I blame changing rooms - Fleur de lys stencils/rag rolling anyone? Its also a massive upheaval for everyone in the house when things are constantly changing.

Similarly with my clients I always design for them with a view to the future, so a playroom that works for a young child but can also grow with the child so it doesn’t feel too ‘kiddy’ when they are a teenager.
